Deleting Your Data
You have full control over your data. This guide covers how to remove specific data, disconnect accounts, and completely delete your Curl Budget account.
Types of Data Removal
Removing Specific Data
Delete individual items without closing your account:
- Individual transactions
- Specific accounts
- Categories, tags, or budgets
Disconnecting Accounts
Remove bank connections while keeping your account:
- Stops syncing new transactions
- Choose to keep or delete history
- Account remains usable
Deleting Your Account
Completely remove everything:
- All data permanently deleted
- Account closed
- Cannot be undone after retention period
Removing Individual Data
Deleting Transactions
Remove specific transactions:
- Find the transaction
- Open transaction details
- Tap "Delete Transaction"
- Confirm deletion
Deleted transactions:
- Are immediately removed
- Don't count toward budgets or reports
- Cannot be recovered
Deleting Manual Accounts
Remove a manual account:
- Go to Settings → Accounts
- Select the manual account
- Tap "Delete Account"
- Confirm
This deletes:
- The account
- All transactions in that account
- Related data
Deleting Categories/Tags
Remove categories or tags:
- Go to Settings → Categories (or Tags)
- Select the item
- Tap "Delete"
- Choose what happens to associated transactions
- Confirm
Options for transactions:
- Move to another category/tag
- Leave uncategorized/untagged
Deleting Budgets
Remove budgets:
- Go to Budgets
- Select the budget
- Tap "Delete Budget"
- Confirm
Deleting a budget:
- Removes budget tracking
- Doesn't affect transactions
- Can be recreated anytime
Disconnecting Bank Accounts
Disconnecting vs. Deleting
When you disconnect a bank account:
| Option | What Happens |
|---|---|
| Keep history | Account removed, transactions preserved |
| Delete history | Account and all its transactions removed |
How to Disconnect
- Go to Settings → Accounts
- Select the connected account
- Tap "Disconnect"
- Choose: Keep or delete transaction history
- Confirm
After Disconnecting
- Plaid access is revoked immediately
- No more new transactions sync
- Kept transactions remain accessible
- Can reconnect the same account later
Reconnecting
If you reconnect a previously disconnected account:
- New transactions sync going forward
- Previously kept transactions remain
- May have a gap if disconnected for a while
Leaving Workspaces
Leaving a Shared Workspace
If you're a member (not owner):
- Go to Settings → Workspaces
- Select the workspace
- Tap "Leave Workspace"
- Confirm
Your data in that workspace:
- Transactions you added remain
- You lose access to the workspace
- Others can still see your past contributions
Transferring Workspace Ownership
If you're an owner and want to leave:
- Promote another member to Owner
- Then leave the workspace
- Or delete the workspace entirely
Deleting Your Account
What Gets Deleted
When you delete your account:
- Your Curl Budget account
- All workspaces you own
- All transactions and history
- All settings and preferences
- All connected account relationships
What Remains
- Transactions you added to others' workspaces
- Other users' data in shared workspaces
- Your email may be referenced in workspace history
How to Delete
- Go to Settings → Account
- Tap "Delete Account"
- Confirm your email
- Confirm deletion
Waiting Period
Account deletion includes a waiting period:
- Initial deletion - Account marked for deletion
- Retention period - 90 days to change your mind
- Permanent deletion - After retention, data is permanently removed
Canceling Deletion
During the retention period:
- Log back in
- You'll see a "restore account" option
- Confirm restoration
- Account is restored with all data
After Permanent Deletion
Once the retention period ends:
- All data is permanently deleted
- Cannot be recovered
- Email can be reused for a new account
Subscription Considerations
Before Deleting
If you have an active subscription:
- Cancel your subscription first (via Apple)
- Then delete your account
- Subscription won't be refunded for early deletion
Grace Period
If you're in a grace period:
- Deleting your account ends access immediately
- No recovery possible after retention period
Data Export
Before Deleting
Consider exporting your data:
- Transaction history for records
- Reports for reference
- Category/budget setup for recreation
How to Export
- Go to Settings → Export Data
- Choose export format
- Download your data
- Store securely
Third-Party Data
Plaid
When you disconnect or delete:
- Our access via Plaid is revoked
- Plaid may retain data per their policy
- Manage Plaid data at my.plaid.com
Apple
For Apple accounts:
- Disconnecting removes our access
- Apple retains your data per their policy
- Manage in Apple ID settings
Verification
Why We Verify
Deletion is permanent, so we verify:
- You're the account owner
- You intend to delete
- You understand the consequences
What's Required
- Email confirmation
- Possibly re-authentication
- Confirmation of intent
